Artificial Intelligence, Genuine Stupidity

Ever since I found myself in a fast-casual-order-modification-service-agent-chat doom loop, I’ve been contemplating a series of posts called: 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗽𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆.

I’ll be looking for examples (so hit me up).

The short of it: I’m increasingly frustrated with where we’re pointing the supposedly game-changing technology:

I used to be a customer with wants and needs…
…Now I’m a set of monetizable eyeballs expressed as potential lifetime value.

I was a student engaged in learning…
…Now, I’m a score spit out by some model’s assessment of my ability to pay tuition.

I was an engaged citizen who had something to say about the future of my town, county, state and country…
…Now I’m a potential campaign donor with known hot buttons that increase my likelihood to donate.

At least I still get to be a passionate fan who lives and dies with my teams…
…Except my teams have sold my data to someone who predicts the likelihood that I’ll make an in-game bet on second-half passing attempts.

I long for the days when I was a human being…
…Rather than a vast set of data crunched in the cloud via ever-optimizing AI models.

Is it any wonder that all this intelligence hasn’t brought us the fulfillment we crave? Maybe it’s time to start asking if we’re using intelligence for the right purposes.
